So today is 12th January – Official “Quitters Day”
It’s the day when those resolutions that filled us with hope on January 1st, now seem completely out of reach – what were we thinking??? So here are a few ideas to get you past today (and the rest of the year) and moving towards your goals.
1 – Be Realistic!
Take a long hard look at those resolutions In the excitement of a brand new year, we can get a bit carried away, and decide to achieve everything immediately. We won’t drink or smoke, we will eat healthily and exercise, we will lose weight, get a promotion, buy a car, a house, travel the world, our lives will be perfect this year – the list is endless – and, while I have to admire the enthusiasm, burn out is a real issue
Instead of quitting –
Prioritise! Choose 1 or 2 things that you need to achieve this year. Focus all your energy on those.
2 – “Make at least one definite move daily towards your goal” – Bruce Lee
Be determined to keep moving forwards – small lifestyle changes are the usually the ones that stick.
Every day, do something that gets you a bit closer. Something you can feel good about. Step by step inch towards that goal. Even if you don’t quite make it, you will be in a better place than where you started.
I intended to lose a stone in weight last year – I broke my ankle and had to stop running, but I finished the year 6lb lighter – I didn’t hit my goal, but for me it was a result!
3 – Allow for failure!!
There are going to be set backs – it’s a normal part of life.
How many diets have been broken when you take a bite of chocolate and think “well, I’ve given in now – I may as well finish the whole bar”
It takes practice to be able to pick yourself up, dust yourself off – readjust your goals if you need to and start again – goals are for life – not just for New Years.
Winston Churchill once said “Success is the ability to go from one failure to another with no loss of enthusiasm” Remember JK Rowling was rejected 12 times before getting success with Harry Potter.
4 – Keep your eye on the prize
This is why you are putting in the work.
Write your goals down, share them with people, take pictures of what you are aiming for. Put them somewhere that you will see daily – In your diary, on a fridge door. Remind yourself daily of why this is important to you.
Goals are harder to ignore when they are shared or written down – it keeps you accountable.
5 – Surround yourself with motivation
Have you ever been in that place where you’ve been feeling a little down in the dumps and sorry for yourself and then: Pow! Out of the blue, that one song comes on the radio, the song that gets you singing and clapping and jigging around in the seat, by the end of it you feel like we can take on the world?
Maybe it wasn’t a song, it might have been a movie or something you read, or even a person who always picks you up and motivates you.
That’s what we need to harness.
Surround yourself with it. Have a Go To list of things to do when you’re just not feeling it.
Along with this comes avoiding the people in your life who always put a negative slant on things. They are always there somewhere – if they can’t be avoided, allow your own voice drown out theirs. Be your own biggest cheerleader!
“You are beautiful”
“You are capable”
“You are amazing”
“You can achieve fabulous things”
“You are moving on with your life”
“The man who says it cannot be done, should not interrupt man doing it”
6 – Keep a record of your journey.
It’s easy to miss the progress you’ve made if you don’t keep a record – just jot it down in a diary or a notebook somewhere. It makes great motivational reading.
I write down everything that I do each day I my diary. Then when I feel like I’ve not achieved much – I go back and have a read – and say “Wow girl – you did good this week”
Celebrate every small success. Even if you haven’t reached your final goal yet, remember to treat yourself. Flowers, chocolates, a day out – don’t wait for someone else to give you the recognition. Take control!
7 – Find Joy in the journey
This is such an important part of setting and achieving goals.
Happiness does not come at the end of achieving your goals – it’s found in the journey. Determine yourself that you will enjoy every moment of the experience – enjoy the struggles and hard work that you are putting in, feel yourself getting stronger, more capable, more confident. Be the person you want to be!
Whether you reach your final goals or not, the satisfaction of knowing that you gave it your all and grew in so many ways along the way, means that you are awesome.
Don’t Give Up – Start fresh every day, be the change you want in your life!!
